Weights & Measures

Picture2.jpg

Measures and weights were not unified across the Islamic world but differed in value by period and region. Datasets include general weights and measures, numismatic weights, and weights and measures by region. It becomes increasingly complex to use the information for the purpose of calculations when the value cannot be verified and the source is not indicated. The main source for the data provided here is W. Hinz’s Islamische Masee und Gewichte: Umgerechnet ins metrische System, (Leiden, Brill, 1959) which we used through the English translation by M. Islamil Marcinkowski, Measures and Weights in the Islamic World, published by the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2003.
